Mac OS X comes with a very handy accessibility tool called VoiceOver.  It offers interface that offers you magnification options, keyboard control and spoken English descriptions of what’s happening on screen. If you have a visual impairment, VoiceOver enables you to work collaboratively with other Mac users or work on their computers without assistance.

I don't have a visual impairment but I am a terrible proof reader.  I use VoiceOver to read aloud the contents of files including web pages, Mail messages and word processing files.

I find that letting my MacBook read me a web page help keep my eyes from getting tired.  I often write very leangthly articles and I use my Macs VoiceOver feature to proof read them to me.  I find that I'm better able to pick up gramatical errors if I hear the text instead of just reading it.

Setting up VoiceOver on your Mac
If your running Mac OS X you can get your Mac to speak by:
  • Access system preferences by clicking the apple icon in the top left corner of your screen
  • Select speech
  • Select text to speech
  • Customize your options
  • Be sure to select the set key option which will allow you to initiate speech with a pre-determined combination of key strokes.
  • You're done.  Highlight some text, click you keys, and listen to your Mac read.
